MEF Awards VeloCloud SDN Technology of the Year Status
SD-WAN solution provider VeloCloud Networks Inc. has received the 2016 SDN Technology of the Year designation from the MEF.
The award was conveyed last week as part of the MEF 2016 Excellence Awards. A panel of analysts from ATLANTIC-ACM, Current Analysis, Frost & Sullivan, IHS Markit, Metanoia, Ovum, SDxCentral, and Vertical Systems served as the judges.
"SD-WAN is an emerging application of SDN and NFV that the MEF recognizes should be addressed as a connectivity service and managed by lifecycle service orchestration,” said Sanjay Uppal, co-founder and CEO of VeloCloud. “This award recognizes the benefits of VeloCloud SD-WAN and its unique ability to enable both service providers and enterprises to simplify and automate complex on-premise[s] WAN functions by delivering them from the cloud."
AT&T and DT are among the users of VeloCloud’s SD-WAN solution.
AT&T is using VeloCloud to support two models. One approach involves an over-the-top model in which the CSP puts SD-WAN at all of a customer's branches and at the data center. Another involves installing a multitenant gateway and integrating it at points of presence where MPLS is, so traffic coming in from both MPLS and broadband internet connections can jump on an MPLS backbone and provide access to on-premises applications and private data centers. Because the broadband link goes to the closest point of presence to the branch office, it brings that connection onto the carrier’s MPLS network as soon as possible for better performance.
DT is using the VeloCloud solution to support its Internet of Things deployments. SD-WAN is a good match for IoT, according to VeloCloud, because applications like connected car are time sensitive, so require very low jitter and low packet loss. SD-WAN provides the affordability and quality of service to control jitter and packet to negligible levels, the company explained to me in an interview earlier this month.
